Hi, Kim — I misplaced your card, but found this way to contact you. Your idea to have some kind of local ASJA event is a good one. I don’t know how many members there are around here — probably not many — but it might be something we could tie in to a campus event, or students.
Disappearing Destinations is daunting! So many places I need to get to soon! Thanks for writing it.
I’m worried about gold mining ruining the Amazon. NPR’s http://www.thenewshour did a segment on it November 7, 2011. There have been millions of radio commercials promoting ‘buy gold now…’ Unfortunately, one of the biggest promoters seems to be Thom Hartmann on ‘Green960′ am960 in San Francisco. Maybe, if enough people asked him (and everyone else doing those ads) to please stop promoting gold he might stop. Try to get him other ads for his show, to replace the sale of gold. If he has an ad replacement lined up, it would probably be easier to replace the gold ads.
Please consider having a daily radio show &/or training people you believe may have success on the air. You can start ‘small’ and work up to a ‘big’ show: start with one hour a month, then one hour a week, then one hour a day…to four hours a day on the air. Many stations could use a show on ‘Disappearing Destinations,’ especially during the hours from about 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Consider getting a show on KPFA in Berkeley. Green 960 am radio in San Francisco has a ‘comedy bar/strip club jokes/kindergarten jokes’ from about 6 to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday…try to get you and your fans to get this time slot on Green 960 in San Francisco. The host makes jokes about ‘ha-ha-ha dead dolphins! and all those wasting their time trying to save the whales, ha ha ha!” Allen Greyson seems to be getting money from Sea World/Blackstone, for promoting Sea World in Florida. Maybe you could get help starting your own show from graduates of http://www.youthradio.
